Short bio · third person, for programs and press

Fabian Tingelhoff is a Tenured Assistant Professor in Information Systems Ethics at EMLV Business School in Paris. He investigates how immersive platforms shape the structures of technology-mediated ecosystems and, consequently, organizational strategies, and how immersive technologies and artificial intelligence can be designed and used ethically, with a focus on user emancipation and well-being. His work appears in the Journal of Strategic Information Systems, the Journal of Information Technology and California Management Review, and he presents at leading conferences such as ICIS and the Academy of Management Annual Meeting. The Association for Information Systems awarded him its Entrepreneurial Innovation Fellowship. He received his PhD in Management and Information Systems from the University of St.Gallen and was a visiting graduate researcher at Stanford University and the University of Cambridge.

(02)Research

Two research streams

In both streams, I develop design knowledge for joint value creation between organizations and the people who use their technologies.

Digital surrogate. 31,009 points built from my portrait: the face follows its measured 3D geometry.

Research stream 01

Immersive platforms

Immersive platforms record how people move and where they look. I study how these platforms shape the structures of technology-mediated ecosystems and, consequently, organizational strategies, and I develop design theory for immersive platforms that emancipate their users. Current projects examine how VR meditation spaces can enhance mindfulness and mental well-being, and develop a VR avatar that depicts the symptoms of dementia so that nurses and doctors can practice communicating with their patients.

Research stream 02

Artificial intelligence

Organizations increasingly let language models and AI agents speak and act on their behalf. Drawing on critical theory and sociomateriality, I examine how the materiality of large language models produces hegemonic biases that undermine value creation for organizations and individuals, and how interface design can empower users to counter these biases. A second line of work advances research methods with AI while upholding academic integrity, from a guide to generative AI in structured literature reviews to a taxonomy of AI tools for scientific work.

How I work

  1. 01Prescriptive

Technology companies often put profit and diffusion ahead of user well-being. I develop design theories that mitigate the social and economic harms of emerging technologies while preserving their useful features.

Critical design research · design science research · interview and diary studies

  2. 02Exploratory

Existing theories often miss how quickly new digital technologies, particularly AI, change organizations. I develop insights that help managers and users employ these technologies well across contexts.

Taxonomy development · case studies · grounded theory

  3. 03Foundational

Cumulative research depends on clear definitions, concepts and methods. I define new concepts and improve methods such as design science research, design theory and literature reviews.
